The external cost of coal-fired power generation : the case of Kusile: Part 2
    05 Jul 2013

Electricity generation, transmission and distribution in South Africa are handled almost exclusively by Eskom, a public utility established in 1923. According to Eskom, electricity production capacity in South Africa has been reached (see because of the development of the economy and the fact that South Africa has not recently augmente…

Estimating car ownership and transport energy consumption : a disaggregate study in Nelson Mandela Bay
    21 Jun 2013

This paper investigates energy consumption patterns by households and individuals during travel on a typical day. A methodology is developed to estimate trip-by-trip energy consumption using standard 24-hour travel survey data, and applied to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Area using their 2004 household travel survey. Baseline energy consumption patterns by different modes, times of day, and us…

Components for PEM fuel cells: An overview
    29 Oct 2010

Fuel cells, as devices for direct conversion of the chemical energy of a fuel into electricity by electrochemical reactions, are among the key enabling technologies for the transition to a hydrogen-based economy. Among the various types of fuel cells, polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are considered to be at the forefront for commercialization for portable and transportation ap…

The analysis of irregularly observed stochastic astronomical time-series – I. Basics of linear stochastic differential equations
    02 Dec 2013

The theory of low-order linear stochastic differential equations is reviewed. Solutions to these equations give the continuous time analogues of discrete time autoregressive time-series. Explicit forms for the power spectra and covariance functions of first- and second-order forms are given. A conceptually simple method is described for fitting continuous time autoregressive models to data. F…

The faint source population at 15.7 GHz - I. The radio properties
    24 Jul 2017

We have studied a sample of 296 faint (>0.5 mJy) radio sources selected from an area of the Tenth Cambridge (10C) survey at 15.7 GHz in the Lockman Hole. By matching this catalogue to several lower frequency surveys (e.g. including a deep GMRT survey at 610 MHz, aWSRT survey at 1.4 GHz, NVSS, FIRST and WENSS) we have investigated the radio spectral properties of the sources in this sample; al…

Nafion-stabilised platinum nanoparticles supported on titanium nitride: An efficient and durable electrocatalyst for phosphoric acid based polymer electrolyte fuel cells
    06 Sep 2017

Nafion derived platinum nanoparticles were produced and successfully anchored on titanium nitride (TiN) support (Pt/TiN) and its suitability for phosphoric acid based polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells is reported. Electrochemical cycling of Nafion stabilised Pt/TiN electrocatalyst exhibits good stability, durability and better electrocatalytic activity than the traditionally employed car…

Ethanol oxidation activity and structure of carbon-supported Pt-modified PdSn-SnO2 influenced by different stabilizers
    07 Sep 2017

PdSn-SnO2 nanoparticles supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon were synthesized by chemical reduction in the presence of three different stabilizing agents: ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), sodium citrate (Nacitrate) and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA). TEM analysis showed that PdSn-SnO2 /C catalyst made using the HMTA stabilizer produced the smallest particle size. XRD analysis detected the pr…

Biomass-derived activated carbon as high-performance non-precious electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction
    16 Feb 2018

A new type of Fe and N doped carbon material is synthesized by pyrolyzing ferric chloride doped egg white (EW) and the proposed synthetic route is easy, green, and low-cost. In addition, the as-prepared sample exhibits a feasible magnetism and comparable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity to commercial Pt/C.

Nitrogen-doped carbon coated ZeO2 as a support to Pt nanoparticles in the oxygen reduction reaction
    16 Feb 2018

A new nitrogen-doped carbon (CNx) support for Pt electrocatalysts was prepared by carbonizing polypyrrole on the surface of ZrO2 (ZrO2@CNx) at high temperature. Well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles were easily formed on the ZrO2@CNx. The electrocatalyst was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TEM, XPS. The electrochemical performances indicate that the presence of ZrO2 modified the electro-structure of Pt on…

Smart energy efficient lighting system for smart buildings
    25 Nov 2021

Abstract: In 2019, South Africa reached its all-time high load shedding level of six hours in history due to the strain on the electricity grid. In 2020, the restrictions imposed by the government to curb the spread of COVID-19 led to approximately 3 million South Africans losing their jobs hence, lacked resources to meet up with their utility bills. Therefore, a reduction in energy expenditure w…
