The older construction worker: A study of types of injuries and the events leading to them

11 Aug 2014

Tracking the global trend of an ageing construction workforce, the construction industry in South Africa is not dissimilar. This is a global phenomenon and necessitates research into how the older cohort of the construction work force can be optimally engaged. Optimum worker productivity, high quality products that meet the specifications required, and high levels of occupational health & safety are integral factors in achieving a sustainable workforce. Further, anecdotal evidence suggests that South African construction is arguably characterized by a lack of respect for human life and dignity. Retrenchment of older workers, injuries and incidents are regular occurrences and most times avoidable. Clearly, research is necessary into how the older cohort of the construction work force can optimally be employed in the industry.
