‘My mother’s maids, when they did sew and spin’: Staging Sewing, Telling Tales

Sewing is often evoked or staged in Shakespeare’s plays. Such moments can occasion reflection on the status of story-telling, the processes of literary and dramatic making, and performance (especially of gender). This essay suggests that there were more sewing scenes on the early modern stage than surviving stage directions indicate.
